Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1962 Porsche 356B Carrera 2 GS. This restored Euro-spec Grand Sport has been part of a private collection for 36 years until now. Power comes from a GT-spec Type 587/2 2.0-liter four-cam upgrade mated to a rebuilt four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes fog lamps, ventilated chrome wheels, disc brakes, wood steering wheel, and VDO gauges. Finished in Silver Metallic over Wine Red leather interior, this Carrera 2 GS comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, spare parts, and clear title.
This 356B dates back to May 16, 1962, when it was assembled for the European market as a Carrera 2 GS. It was later exported to California, becoming part of a long-term private collection. As part of the car’s 20-year restoration that was completed in December 2023, the Ivory (code 6204) body was taken down to bare metal by Porsche sheet metal fabricator Andy Elsener and repainted Silver Metallic (code 6206) by Jim Rinker. Features include fog lamps, replacement glass, driver-side mirror, rear reflectors, twin-vent engine cover, and center-exit single-outlet exhaust system.
Ventilated 15-inch chrome wheels with Porsche crest center caps are wrapped in 165HR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The front cargo compartment also contains a Vredestein spare tire on a chrome wheel.
The Wine Red (code 9274) leather interior was installed by Autos International, replacing the car’s original black leather upholstery. The lap belts and carpeting are color-matched to the new interior. Amenities include front buckets, dual rear seats with fold-down backrests, wood steering wheel with ebony inlay made by Bruce Crawford at Hardwood Classics, push-button AM/FM radio, VDO clock, and perforated white headliner.
VDO instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, centrally mounted 8,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level and oil temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads one mile, although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The rear-mounted Type 587/2 GT-spec 2.0-liter flat-four was procured by Peter Hoffman of 356 Classic Parts and was reportedly built and tested by Jacques Le Friant. It features a custom wiring harness from YnZ’s Yesterdays Parts. A four-speed manual transaxle rebuilt by Jon Bunin of Werkstatt is equipped with a steel intermediate plate, BBAB gears, and 12-bolt differential.
Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes.
This Carrera 2 GS includes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, uninstalled rear valance, and uninstalled front and rear bumper guards.
