Pick of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang SportsRoof

Ever see a car that didn’t interest you very much but something about it grabbed you? Perhaps it was a Rambler with a Twin-Stick transmission or a Dodge Dart with a Gator Grain vinyl top, or maybe something else. In the case of our Pick of the Day, a 1970 Ford Mustang SportsRoof, it’s a bright and cheery interior color. It is listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Windsor, Colorado. With the Mach I and Boss Mustangs often garnering your attention, it is unusual to see a regular, unmodified Mustang SportsRoof. That’s one thing that makes this Blue Oval cool. But here’s an interesting bit of trivia: the Mach I sold better than the standard SportsRoof, so there are other reasons than collectability why the latter tends to get lost in the shuffle.

Yet this SportsRoof has another charm: the Vermilion interior. For some, it may be too much red, but the black components add balance to those whose eyes have been seared. Matching the interior is a similar hue on the flanks. Eye appeal goes a long way in a collectible car purchase.

So, despite the tepid 302-2V, there’s a lot to like about this 1970 Ford Mustang SportsRoof. “Runs well,” says the second owner, plus the automatic transmission was rebuilt 5,000 miles ago and the gas tank was replaced. “Exterior repainted once, minor rust was repaired, otherwise original.” As it’s a Mustang, original or reproduction parts are never an issue, which the seller can vouch for since the “interior is original except the front seats which were reupholstered.” Dig the wheel covers!

Mustangs are evergreen collectibles — even the coupes. This one has style in spades in a color combo that pulls you in. Pony up $39,000 or best offer, and it can be yours.
