There is an enthusiast network for just about ever make and model of vehicle ever produced. Did you know that there is a Reatta Division of the Buick Club of America? Within the club’s website are discussion forums, a marketplace, heritage production information, and all sorts of other data.
The Pick of the Day is a low-mileage 1990 Buick Reatta convertible listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Worcester, Massachusetts. (Click the link to view the listing)
“Collectible vehicle that was 1 of 87 produced in this color combo,” the listing begins. “Buick’s sports car that was powered by the bulletproof 3.8 engine and was front wheel drive.”
The Reatta launched in model year 1988 as a two-door, two-seat grand-tourer on the General Motors E-body platform. General Motors leveraged a special assembly plant – aptly named the Reatta Craft Center – to crank out about 21,000 units over the course of the car’s four model years. In 1990, a convertible joined the lineup, complete with a manually-operated top and a glass rear window. Today’s featured vehicle is such a car, and for being almost 25 years old, it has held up remarkably well.
My favorite thing about the Reatta was its futuristic infotainment and technology. The car was innovative for its time, and some of the earlier models featured a touchscreen Electronic Control Center (ECC). An electroluminescent instrument cluster gave digital readouts for vehicle vitals. An automatic climate control and a Delco AM/FM stereo with a built-in graphic equalizer were some of the other niceties that were ahead of their time. The trunk on today’s featured car contains all sorts of goodies including an owner’s booklet and the factory service manuals.
In full transparency, the listing does call out a few noteworthy flaws or known issues with the car. The power antenna and cruise control do not work, the driver seat upholstery shows some wear, and there are some scratches on the trunk as shown in the accompanying photos. That being said, you can’t argue with its overall condition and rarity.
“This car could be driven anywhere,” the seller says. The odometer shows just 64,500 miles, and power comes from GM’s robust, transverse-mounted “3800” V6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
